Shah Rukh Brings Star Power to TOIFA

Shah Rukh Brings Star Power to TOIFA

The Academies may be over, but Vancouver is gearing up for its own awards show. The Times of India Film Awards (TOIFA) will take place April 4th to 6th, and some of India’s biggest names will attend this star-studded event.

For those of you wondering how Bollywood stars stack up against Hollywood stars, consider Shah Rukh Khan, a contender in the Best Male Actor category for his role in Jab Tak Hai Jaan (As Long as There is Life).

If you don’t speak Hindi, Khan’s probably the biggest name you’ve never heard off. The 47-year old actor recently graced the cover of Forbes India where he topped their inaugural Top 100 Celebrity list. With a fan base said to exceed one billion, the Los Angeles Times has called Khan “the world’s biggest movie star,” and in 2008 Newsweek named him one of the 50 Most Powerful People in the World.

According to Forbes, Khan earned about two billion rupees, approximately $38 million dollars, between October 2011 and September 2012. The notoriously charming actor has appeared in about 75 Hindi films is believed to have a net worth exceeding $500 million dollars.

Khan’s competition for Best Male Actor includes Manoj Bajpayee (Gangs Of Wasseypur), Irrfan Khan (Paan Singh Tomar), Ranbir Kapoor (Barfi!), and Hrithik Roshan (Agneepath).

Actresses competing for the title of Best Female are Deepika Padukone (Cocktail), Priyanka Chopra (Barfi!), and Sridevi (English Vinglish)

Other categories at the TOIFAs include best supporting role, best villain, best comedic role, best debut, and best director. Finally, the movies slugging it out for the coveted title of Best Film are Barfi!, Gangs of Wasseypur, Kahaani, Paan Singh Tomar, and Vicky Donor.

The TOIFAs will end with a gala style ceremony at BC Place on April 6th.  A statement released by the organization this week confirmed Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, and Abhishek Bachchan would all be attending, giving Vancouverites a chance to gaze upon a new body of stars.
